PASTOR ADEBOYE’S RETIREMENT: THREE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

pastor-adeboye

Last week there was news that the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has retired. Here are three facts we should know:

He was forced. Churches and other religious bodies are registered as charity/non-profit organizations and often have their own legal gymnastics with the authorities. The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) has a code that says no leader of such non-profit organizations should be leader for more than 20 years. This law has been existing for years. However, it’s never been enforced as we have many church leaders heading for more than 20 years. The new administration, with the Executive Secretary of the FRC Jim Obazee, took to enforcing the law, forcing Pastor Adeboye to appoint a new General Overseer (hold that thought). Also, his remarks on Sunday further prove this to be true. PS. Jim Obazee was sacked days after.

Only in Nigeria. The Redeemed Christian Church of God may have started in Nigeria but it is certainly not a one-country organization.  There are Redeemed churches in Europe, Middle East and other parts of Africa, and those churches are regulated by the laws of the country in which they are situated. This means the organization is international and only the churches in Nigeria are bound by the laws of Nigeria. That is why Pastor Adeboye created a position which, before now, never existed: the office of the General Overseer, Nigeria. This position was filled on the 7th of January 2017, when Pastor Adeboye appointed Pastor Joseph Obayemi as the General Overseer in NIGERIA ONLY.

Pastor Adeboye remains the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God worldwide, Nigeria inclusive. They may likely create General Overseer positions in other countries to tally with the new structure so we would hear “General Overseer, Canada… General Overseer, Zimbabwe…” etc. But all those would be under Pastor Adeboye, the Overall General Overseer.

From the foregoing, it is evident that nothing changed, only new positions were created. Pastor Adeboye remains the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of Nigeria.
