Hi There. Get ready to dive into the fabulous city of Eket in Akwa Ibom state. I would like to use this opportunity to say thank you for  the positive feedback you, our readers, have been giving us on these city guides. Your feedback helps us improve so please keep them coming.

So Wikipedia once again says “Eket is the second largest city in Akwa Ibom StateNigeria. The name also refers to the indigenous ethnic group of the region and to their language. The city itself, an industrial city that in recent years has become a conurbation engulfing separate villages, has a population of over 200,000, while entire urban area, which covers OkonNsit Ubium,Idua, Afaha Eket and Esit Eket, has a combined population of 364,489, the second largest urban population in Akwa Ibom state.”

Isn’t that impressive? Well in our usual way, we got to the city and asked residents to tell us what it’s like over there. Let’s do this!

On Security/People

Eket is very safe an from where I stand, there is nothing to worry about. The environment is calm and friendly.

The people in Eket are nice. When I first came here from Port Harcourt, I was shocked how a stranger would pass you on the road and say hello. I soon realized it was a norm to say hi to strangers. That’s how friendly they are over here.

On Housing

When it comes to rent, you can find a good one-bedroom flat for N100,000 – N150,000. This has increased lately due to the fact that the city is becoming more and more populated. That being said, the spaces in these houses are huuuuge.

On Hotels/Accommodation

If you are visiting us in Eket, then accommodation won’t be a problem. Here we have standard hotels that go for N3,000 a night. Sure if you are looking for that N10,000 per night hotel, we got those too but let’s look at it this way, what you get for N10,000 in Eket is probably the kind of hotel room you would pay N30,000 and above in other cities.

On Food

Food is a tricky topic when you are in Akwa Ibom sate in general. For us, it is not about where to get great food – you find it just about anywhere so what I will recommend is the kinds of food you should endeavour to eat while you are here.

Ekpang Nkukwo – This is a not-so-simple delicacy which consists of a cocoa-yam base wrapped in Ugu (pumpkin) leaves and it is simply amazing.
Pumpkin seeds soup – Many people do not even know that you can make a soup out of pumpkin seeds. Once you’ve had it – well let’s just say your life won’t remain the same.

On Nightlife
Like every other major city, you must have a bit of nightlife. Here in Eket, we have a number of clubs and they are in the main town so they are not difficult to find.

On Leisure

When it comes to the ‘happening’ place in Eket, it’s got to be the Ibeno beach. Even though I prefer it when there is no crowd, if you want to get the full feel of this place, then show up on a weekend or holiday. It’s really a lot of fun as you can play in the water, enjoy other people’s company and have some suya.

Eket for me is a place for that cool relaxation we all need every once in a while. Akwa Ibom state is not just about Uyo anymore. Eket is a nice tourist zone and there’ll be more. Do subscribe to our newsletter so you stay updated.
