Reading Time: 6 minutes
What is  social media to you? A place to stay in touch with friends and families, share selfies, blame Buhari for all your misfortunes, stalk your ex boyfriend or girlfriend, beg for money like some people on Instagram or a platform to know what is in the news or happenings in your industry.
Whatever the reason that brings you to these platforms, social media is the most powerful tool for marketing, networking and nurturing business relationships in 2019.
Growing a business in 2019 without social media is like Donald Trump trying to win election without Twitter. Well, It may interest you to know that what started in 2004 at Harvard Dorm Room as a student directory; Facebook, is now a community of  2.23 billion monthly users with over 80 million small- and medium-sized business Pages. And that’s just Facebook alone. Not to mention Instagram which was the Social Media Platform Of The Year in 2018, and YouTube which is currently the second most visited digital platform after Google. This tells you that social media has grown from being a platform we go to share selfies to a powerful marketing tool the world has ever seen.
If you’re still using it for selfies sharing alone, kneel down wherever you are and ask God for digital sense before you continue reading.
Today, everybody wants to have a business presence on social media, but what we fail to understand is that social media can make or break us. Some have used it to destroy their lives. Others have used it to change their stories from bad to great. I’m writing this because I want you to take advantage of the digital disruption. Because I want you to win in the social media jungle. And because I want you to get the best results from your digital marketing efforts in 2019. 2019 must stew everywhere and alert must fall like Port Harcourt rain (a loud AMEN to that).
Here  Are The 10 Social Media Marketing Mistakes You Need To Avoid In 2018
1- Starting Without A Strategy
2- Trying To Do Everything Yourself
3- Buying Followers And Likes
4- Ignoring Your Audiences
5- Posting What You Like instead Of What Your Audience Likes
6- Spamming Instead Of Impacting
7- NOT TAKING ADVANTAGE OF DIGITAL ADVERTISING
8- Posting Too Many promotional Messages
9- Not Building A Personal Brand
10- Not Having A Website
1- STARTING WITHOUT A STRATEGY
‘’What do you want to achieve? The answers to this question are objective. How will you go about achieving your desired results? Now the answer to this is strategy “- William E Rothschild
One of the reasons why some people get frustrated with social media and digital marketing is because they jump into social media marketing without a plan. How do you expect to get results when you don’t know where you are going and how you going to get there? Just like you need a business plan for your business, your social media marketing campaign needs a plan.
Before you get started with social media marketing, you are supposed to know your objectives and have a step by step plan on how you are going to achieve them, you are supposed to know your target audience and the social media channels they are active on, define your success metrics and more.
Launching a social media marketing campaign without a plan is like driving in the fast lane with your eyes closed.
2- TRYING TO DO EVERYTHING YOURSELF
These days everybody can run a Facebook ad. The question is, are you getting results from your Facebook ad? If you are not, its time you involve the service of an expert and stop giving money to Mark Zuckerberg who is already  richer than your kindred. I’m not saying you cannot do it, no. You can do it, just know what you are doing. Get trained. Besides, as a business owner, you are supposed to outsource your social media marketing and focus on other aspects of your business.
From contents to analytics to online customer care, you need a team. And that’s where QliqMedia comes in.
Not just the ad, an expert will help you develop a return on investment focus digital  marketing strategy, help you implement the strategy, measure your return on investment, find out what is working and what is not working and find solutions to your Social Media Marketing problems and more. Work with a professional this year.
3- BUYING FOLLOWERS AND LIKES
Buying followers and likes is a serious social media sin, and the gods of social media do not believe in forgiveness.
In case you didn’t know,  Twitter cleaned 70 million fake and automated accounts in a two month span last year (and 1 million more daily), Instagram conceded that over 50% of engagements on its posts tagged as #sponsored are fake and they might do their own clean up soon. Why fake your popularity when you can build a sustainable relationship with your community over time and grow your audience the right way?
Come to think of it. Fake followers cannot buy your products, they can’t bring it referrals. So why invest in something that will hurt you in the future? You see those guys selling 1000 followers for N2000? Avoid them like Ebola patients. Don’t buy fake followers.
4- IGNORING YOUR AUDIENCE
Look at it this way: You move into a new neighborhood and everyday you go out and come in without saying hi to anybody. You don’t even greet your neighbors. Meanwhile you are looking to be the most popular person in your neighborhood. How do you want people in your neighborhood to know you?
Think about it! If someone takes out time to comment on your post, he deserves a response. Respond to comments, direct messages, emails and engage with other people’s posts too. It’s called social media for a reason. I understand that the only thing some people came into this world with was PRIDE. But could it be that pride is the reason why you are struggling online? Who knows.
5- POSTING WHAT YOU LIKE INSTEAD OF WHAT YOUR AUDIENCE LIKES
Needless to say, the fastest way to build trust and credibility is to provide valuable content consistently for your target audience. Think about Tunde Ednut, Emmanuella, Linda Ikeji, John Obidi, they all create and share quality content consistently. In 2019, find out what your audience likes and give it to them the way they want it and they will reward you by joining your community, buying your products and spreading word about your business. Remember nobody is on social media to see adverts.
6 – SPAMMING INSTEAD OF IMPACTING
Some people think that posting links to their sales page everywhere is marketing. It’s not marketing. Marketing is creating a product that solves a problem for a target market at a price they can buy  and at a time and place they want it. Spamming makes people see you as a nuisance, and they will think you are not serious.
7- NOT TAKING ADVANTAGE OF DIGITAL ADVERTISING
Its puzzling why some people are yet to embrace digital advertising. In my opinion, a digital ad is a small business owners’ best friend. Thinking about generating leads, increasing brand awareness, getting more customers, making more sales or getting customers to spend more? One strategy to achieve all this is through digital advertising. You can stay in Port Harcourt and target somebody in Canada with your ad. Master Social media and Google Ad or hire a Facebook or Google Ad expert  to work with.
8- POSTING TOO MANY PROMOTIONAL MESSAGES
This is not to say that you shouldn’t advertise your offers; you can,  but make sure there is a balance. I use the 80/20 Rule.
That is, 80% free valuable content and 20% sales content. With the 80/20 Rule, your audience will be the ones asking to know how they can work with you.
9- NOT BUILDING YOUR PERSONAL BRAND
A well built personal brand will result in a number of things: Better business opportunities, more job offers, increased clientele, greater revenue, more companies.
Everybody should strive to work on their personal brand. Your vision can get blurred, but your brand will stay if created effectively and with time and effort. With a strong personal brand, you can launch and sell out a product without struggle.
10- NOT BUILDING AND UPDATING YOUR WEBSITE
I’m including this to remind you to get a website if you are yet to build one for yourself. Any business without a website in 2019 is not a serious business. And it’s only serious and digitally empowered businesses that will win in 2019.
CONCLUSION
Digital and Social media marketing when planned and executed carefully can scale your business at a speed of light. You just have to obey the commandments so you can enjoy the from of the land.
